New Amsterdam Medical Center is located in New York City, New York and this tv show focuses on its mission to fix the neglected facility by tearing up its bureaucracy to provide exceptional care to patients.

During the course of the series, 89 episodes of New Amsterdam aired over five seasons.

On January 11, 2020, the show was renewed for three additional seasons. Season 3 was shortened and had a small amount of episodes due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic and the staff had to be safe during that time. Seasons 4 and 5 had a good number of episodes following the shortened third season. After leaving New Amsterdam briefly, beloved character Doctor Floyd Reynolds returned to help during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic.

In January 2020, NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy said, "There is a potential for a spinoff. I can imagine a whole world around New Amsterdam." At that time, Nellie Andreeva of Deadline Hollywood added that no conversations were happening, but members of the production were open to the possibility because of the depth of New Amsterdam characters and stories that could be explored with a spin-off.

In March 2022, it was announced that the series will end after a 13-episode fifth season.

In the United Kingdom, the series premiered its first half of Season 1 on Amazon Video on February 8, 2019. Amazon Video releases the series in binge-ready batches, with further episodes released in May 2019 and November 2019.

Premise[]

New Amsterdam is based on Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, following the institution's newest Medical Director, Doctor Max Goodwin who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking ā€œnoā€ for an answer, Doctor Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital and return it to the glory that put it on the map by the fact of it being the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States.[2] In this effort, he deployed a team of courageous and passionate doctors who worked hard to give good care and health to their patients. But this team also had a variety of personal and professional issues to deal with while they were working inside the hospital and these issues were explored outside the hospital as well.

Originally, the show focused around Doctors Max Goodwin, Lauren Bloom, Helen Sharpe, Floyd Reynolds, Iggy Frome and Vijay Kapoor. They were the original medical team at New Amsterdam Medical Center. Doctor Max Goodwin is the Medical Director at New Amsterdam Medical Center who is brilliant and charming and will stop at nothing to make the hospital a healing and comforting place. He promises to bring in more experienced attendings, thereby reducing the number of inexperienced residents. He had a strong relationship with his colleagues but faces personal and health dilemmas throughout his time at New Amsterdam. Doctor Lauren Bloom is the Head of the Emergency Department (E.D.) at New Amsterdam Medical Center and would later go to rehab to heal herself. She was addicted to drugs. She had a strong relationship with her peers at New Amsterdam and had brief romantic relationships with a couple of her peers. She also faced Personal and Professional dilemmas while working at New Amsterdam. Doctor Floyd Reynolds is the Head of the Department of Surgery at New Amsterdam Medical Center. He is close with his New Amsterdam family. He briefly leaves and then comes back to New Amsterdam to help during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID 19) Pandemic. Doctor Helen Sharpe is the most famous doctor of New Amsterdam Medical Center who was Chief of the Department of Oncology at New Amsterdam Medical Center from seasons 1-4, and then decided to transfer to National Health Services (NHS) Hampstead Hospital. She was set to marry Max, but their relationship hit a low point and she was seen briefly in the final season but didnā€™t appear in the final episode. She had a strong relationship with her colleagues but also faced personal and professional dilemmas including her relationship with Max. Doctor Ignatius ā€œIggyā€ Frome is a psychologist and is the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at New Amsterdam Medical Center who worked closely and directly with Doctor Vijay Kapoor and sometimes by himself. He treats his patients with respect and looks at them carefully. He has a strong relationship with his colleagues but is also dealing with numerous professional and personal dilemmas and he tries hard not to cross the line and his orientation sometimes gets in his way. Doctor Vijay Kapoor was Head of the Department of Neurology at New Amsterdam Medical Center and went through a multitude of personal and professional dilemmas before his departure and untimely death. Everyone was shocked about Doctor Kapoorā€™s death. Following the untimely departure of Doctor Helen Sharpe, Doctor Elizabeth Wilder became the new Head of the Department of Oncology at New Amsterdam Medical Center and put it into good hands. She is a brilliant deaf surgeon who is wise beyond her years. She joined the staff at the hospital during a tumultuous time and has become an integral part of the team, providing leadership and boosting morale. Despite numerous obstacles, this team puts everything on the line to save lives and support each other. The Series came to a heartwarming conclusion as we got introduced to an adult version of Luna as she became part of the New Amsterdam family. She asks the same question her father asked when he first started. The question is ā€œHow can I helpā€?.
