"Rise" is the twentieth episode of the fourth season on NBC drama series New Amsterdam, and the seventy-fourth episode overall. It aired on May 10, 2022.

Synopsis[]

Max discovers the extent to which Dr. Fuentes' cuts are severely damaging New Amsterdam and decides it's now or never. Iggy takes an unconventional approach to reach a young patient in need. Reynolds and Wilder perform a risky, life-saving surgery on unborn twins.

Plot[]

Max, Lauren, and the others are given their badges back and allowed to work in the hospitals again. They aren’t entirely happy, as they didn’t get their former positions. Lauren and Casey head to the ED, where she is no longer the chairman. Meanwhile, Max talks to Helen and puts on a brave face, saying that he will depose the incumbent chairman of New Amsterdam and return the hospital to normal.

Back in London, Helen works to save a boy in a coma. He is codes and Helen revives him. The other doctor tells Helen she shouldn't have revived him and threatens to report her actions to the National Institute of Health.

Elizabeth and Floyd speak with a pregnant woman about her twins and how they have tumours in their lungs. Max looks at janitors who have rashes and ailments caused by substandard gloves issued at the hospital.

Iggy interacts with a patient virtually through a video game. Iggy makes plans to meet him at a convention. He doesn’t get out much, but he agrees to meet Iggy. Meanwhile, Floyd and Elizabeth work on the twins, who are still in utero. After they take the twins out and remove the tumours, they cannot return the twins to the uterus.

Helen learns the boy she saved is on life support but will be disconnected tomorrow, per a ruling from the British Court.

Back at New Amsterdam, Max talks to more coworkers and employees and learns more about the hardships they have endured since he left New Amsterdam.

Floyd and Elizabeth think about creating an ectopic pregnancy for their patient since she doesn’t have enough room in the womb for her twins.

Helen calls Max. She has an idea: she could transfer her young patient to New Amsterdam, where his parents could keep him on a ventilator.

Dr. Walsh, who is now OIC for the ED, asks for Lauren’s help when a patient on a nitro drip, who experiences chest pain when the drip is too low and low blood pressure when the drip is too high.

Max helps a number of his coworkers. They hope he takes the hospital back from Veronica. He admits he is done and is going home.

Iggy finally confesses to the young man he plays video games with that he is a doctor who is only trying to help him. The teen immediately disconnects from the game they are in and disappears.

Meanwhile, the British police intervened in Helen’s case, stopping the parents from bringing their son to the US. They are forced to say goodbye to him, as he will be disconnected from life support.

Floyd and Elizabeth are thrilled that the surgery on the twins was a success.

Mark tells Lauren he wants her to head the E.D. again. She accepts and gives Mark a pep talk, saying he will be an amazing head for the E.D. in the future.

Iggy’s video game buddy comes in to see him and accepts his help. Iggy is thrilled.

Lauren offers Leyla a place to live while she fights for her visa.

Max calls Helen to tell Veronica she has won, until he hears chanting. The support staff that he helped have gone on strike and demand that Veronica resign.

Karen goes to Veronica's office to pressure her. She says that this is the first time the hospital has'shut down'. Veronica turns in her badge and leaves New Amsterdam.

Max comes to the roof. There is a celebration; they have the hospital back. Karen tells Max that they need him back too. He has a lot to think about.
