Plot[]
Helen Sharpe has regained her ability to speak. She can now speak full sentences and assist with her mother’s care in England. Max’s ploy to get Veronica fired is also coming together. After integrating UMI with New Amsterdam, Fuentes tries to fire him and his "two-bit accomplices." Max counters that their employment contract prevents their termination.
Following his confrontation with Veronica, Max meets with Sergeant Todd. The two men have never gotten along or agreed about anything, yet they agree about ousting Veronica; she’s a terrible leader. Todd decides to assist Max by presenting some of Max's files on Veronica to his contact at the Department of Justice.
Two new patients came in at the same time. One was named Darby, while the other was named Kaden. They both attended the same elementary school, and they were supposed to each get shots from the school nurse. Only, something went wrong. The nurse managed to mix up their medications. Max went to school to talk to the nurse. He discovered that the school had not had an official nurse for three years and that budget cuts had led to the nurse's firing. Actually, it was the school secretary who was doling out the drugs. She has no medical training, and the school superintendent was the one who authorised her to act as a school nurse.
Max talked to the superintendent about it. He discovered that the superintendent was making every effort. Government officials continued to pinch his budget, despite his best efforts to retain as many teachers as possible. But something had to give. Cuts to the nurse were necessary to make his new budget work. The system was broken. The system malfunctioned at both the hospital and school levels. Even at the school level, it was malfunctioning. There was just nothing the superintendent could do about it. The only thing Max could do was treat both boys. He had help from Bloom. Bloom spoke to Darby, and she found out that the other boy, Kaden, was his bully.
Bloom had inquired about Kaden's bullying tactics. Darby compared Kaden's bullying tactics to the way she had spoken to Casey. Darby also said that Kaden would probably find a way to blame him for what happened, so he was feeling a little depressed when he began coughing up blood.
The doctors rushed in to treat his ulcer. They also met with the parents to propose training them to be certified nurse assistants. This way, they could take turns acting as nurses and making sure the kids had the proper medication.
Sharpe, meanwhile, had heard back about her mother’s care. It was a passing sickness. She was reassured that the illness was not serious, but as she slept in the hospital, her mother began to regret many of the decisions she had made in raising her daughter. She thought about telling her daughter how much she loved her. During her younger years, she aspired to become a dancer as it was a part of her cultural heritage. The woman has made significant sacrifices and hasn't been as present for her daughter as she should have been. She still had the opportunity to share all of that with her daughter once she woke up, but she hadn't done so.
Instead, she told her daughter that she knew how much she loved her. She didn't need to demonstrate her love, unlike Sharpe who was constantly rushing around to ensure her mother received the best care. Back in New York, Max heard from Sergeant Todd. Someone called them off. There wasn’t going to be a federal fraud case in the hospital or with Veronica. Veronica is now safe. Max had no way to oust her, and to do so now would be even more impossible.
Bloom, meanwhile, apologised to the people she felt she had been bullying. She never meant to do so, and she was going to learn from her behaviour.
Iggy had a talk with Trevor about how he hired Trevor for the wrong reasons and would recommend HR fire him. Trevor lashed back at Iggy, telling him he wasn't a nice person. Trevor turns in his ID and leaves.
